STUCK IN THE MIDDLE

Calea Victoriei (Victory Avenue) is bustling and old. This church, along with the one below, sits on it. This quaint Orthodox church is snug among the massive blocks it calls neighbors.

PRETTY IN THE PLAZA

The Kretzulescu Church is said to have been built in 1722... now it sits in Victory Plaza and is a excellent piece of church history.

PATRIARHIA ROMANA

...or maybe "ground zero" for the Romanian Orthodox Church. This is the main cathedral for the entire church. Quite spectacular inside and it sits on a hill overlooking the city. Posted by Picasa

MONASTIC LIFE

Chernica Monastery sits rather pretty in the photo..... there are a lot of monasteries here because the city is "headquarters" for the Orthodox church. Posted by Picasa

1724

...that is the year this jewel was complete. Biserica Stavropoleos is one of the best-kept secrets in Bucharest. It's in an area called Lipscani, which is having a re-birth of sorts. Posted by Picasa

A TRANQUIL SPOT

This quiet spot sits surrounded by a very busy tram station and fronts one of the city's busiest streets.... but you'd nevver know it from this angle of Biserica Sfant Gheorghe (St. George's Church) Posted by Picasa

SNOW WHITE

Biserica Mihai Voda covered in snow...... Posted by Picasa

NICE!

Antim Monastery in Bucharest, nestled among (what else) but apartment blocks! Posted by Picasa

TIMISOARA'S METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL

A nod to our former "hometown" and a great shot of the cathderal downtown... love the green, green grass. Posted by Picasa

TARGU-MURES BEAUTY

This sits proudly in T-M, in the beautiful mountains. This city was part of Hungary in the past. Posted by Picasa

THE LOST POPULATION

This is a former Jewish Synagogue in Targu Mures. The Jewish population was virtually wiped-out between the World War II and communist purges. Many stand, but few are used.

IF IT AIN'T ONE THING.... IT'S ANOTHER

It's a long story... but then here, most of them are. We went for 2 months with no internet and our digital camera was stolen. So, very difficult to photograph all of the desirable churches in Bucharest. I am not above "borrowing," however. The one above was taken by our frined Becky in Targu Mures.

MOUNTAINSIDE BEAUTY

This perfectly placed white church is sitting, surrounded by mountains, in Sighisoara

L - O - S - T

Well, like the fan-fabulous TV show, I've been LOST. Actually, "Lost in America" would be more like it! As it is I find it impossible to snap photos of RO churches from here so I've been unusually quiet. Never fear (all 3 of you who check me out) I'll return soon. Expect more new photos in a few weeks because we're moving to Bucharest and it is filled with churches screaming for me to photograph them... see you soon fellow "Biseica-ers."

THE HUSTLE & THE BUSTLE

Typically, the churches are seen in isolation, uncluttered by their surroundings, but this was too good to pass up. My FAVORITE place in Timisoara (Piata Unirii and the Catholic Church) ...it is surrounded by outdoor cafes, concert stages and people. This is a formidable church in the clutches of 21st century busyness. Posted by Picasa

NIGHT MOVES

These are the spires on the Serbian church, taken from a hazy distance. How cool is this! Posted by Picasa

UP & COMING

This contemporary spire sits atop an under construction orthodox cathederal just out of "downtown" Timisoara. Posted by Picasa

TRIO

A fantasic sky as the backdrop to this trio of spires. Posted by Picasa

PIATA MARIA

As this whole thing evolves, I find that "night shots" are so much cooler.... this is a classic one with "turkish" influence. This church is a small scale replica of a famous church in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). Posted by Picasa

NIGHT IN PIATA TRIAN

This church was recently restored and is quite beautiful.... especially at night! Posted by Picasa
